Jacob a photographer dies and leaves his worldly possessions to his niece Johanna. These include notes, photographs and a journal written in code. Johanna is intrigued and decides to search into her uncle's past. The story runs in parallel revealing Jacob's early life and secrets while following Johanna in her investigations. These lead her to London where her uncle lived in his youth. Johanna unearths a scandal and the murder of children and a chilling discovery in the Thames. The novel is macabre in nature but really captures the sense of history and intrigue of London in the 1900s.
