Dead Man In Trieste - Michael Pearce
ISBN: 1841196673
A Dead Man in Trieste is the first in a new series featuring Seymour of the Special Branch. Michael Pearce specialises in crime novels (with added humour) set all over the world. This one is set in the Balkans before the outbreak of World War I. The British Consul in Trieste has gone missing, so Seymour has to sort out what could be an embarrassment for the government. The unstable political atmosphere of the Balkans in this era is well captured and there's a wide range of interesting characters in this light and witty read. Seymour is a likeable character too and hopefully the other novels will be as good.

Depths of the Forest - Eugenio Fuentes
ISBN: 1900850656
Another great read from an author whose works are not widely translated into English. In this novel nature itself, in the form of the forest, is a significant character when the grieving boyfriend of the murder victim employs a private detective to solve the crime, committed in the depths of the forest.

Detective Insp Huss - Helene Tursten
ISBN: 1569473706
This thoroughly engaging read is the first in a highly promising series of novels to feature the strong willed and enigmatic Inspector Irene Huss, a feminist investigator base in Goteborg and created by Sweden's answer to P.D. James. Fans of Henning Mankell will enjoy the narrative style and the description of a police force working at full stretch, combined with an exploration of the darker sides of Swedish society and its inherent tensions.
The plot revolves around Huss and the Violent Crimes Unit as they investigate the apparent suicide of a finance mogul. It doesn't take the team long to figure out that they're dealing with a murder case and we're carried away into the dark and nebulous criminal underworld. As with all good crime novels the chief protagonist and the supporting cast of characters are all splendidly drawn and will linger in the memory long after the book has been read.

Have Mercy on Us All - Fred Vargas

ISBN: 0099453649
Excellent noirish detective novel set in the 'City of Light,' Paris.
- Lewisham Libraries.
I really enjoyed this quirky translation of a French crime novel starring Detective Adamsberg. Despite a rather bizarre plot centred around an epidemic of the bubonic plague, the author manages to inject a good dose of humour into this otherwise chilling tale.

He who fears the wolf - Karin Fossum
ISBN: 99455226
This sinister plot challenges the reader to unravel two distinct storylines. Whilst confusing me initially, I felt my perseverance was rewarded by her highly distinctive and engaging style.

Innocence - Pierre Magnan
ISBN: 1860469809
Savour the beginning. it's worth it! Positively wallow in passages of descriptive narrative. A June dawn in Provence and Pierrot has slimy snails on his mind, not a protruding foot... from a dead body! A chance encounter yes, but one with huge consequences. Now read "The murdered house"
- Hounslow Libraries
This novel is set in a village in 1945 Provence. The story is told through the eyes of Pierrot, a 15-year-old boy who stumbles across the murdered body of a local resistance hero. Pierrot takes a letter from the body, which leads to him being involved in a tangled web of drama and mystery. The story is as much about love and lust and coming of age with the theme of murder neatly fitting in. It is an exciting and intriguing twist to have the novel told through a hormonally charged 15-year-old!

Late-Night News - Petros Markaris
ISBN: 1843431696
Forget sea, sun and scenery, and think Inspector Costas Haritos, a new name on the block. By page two he's invited you to the seamier side of Athens and idyllic summers will never be the same again.
- Hounslow Libraries
Inspector Haritos is a rather grumpy but loveable Greek inspector who relaxes by reading dictionaries! In this story he is investigating the murder of Janna, a famous TV journalist. Janna was about to reveal a sensational story on TV. Haritos discovers some shocking truths about the world of the Greek media while investigating her murder. This is a very exciting murder mystery with an incredible surprise ending. It's the first of the Inspector Haritos novels that I have read, but it won't be the last.

Leviathan - Boris Akunin

ISBN: 0297645528
In the best Agatha Christie tradition, St. Petersburg's investigator Fandorin vies with French police commissioner Gauche to solve the maiden voyage murder.
- Islington Libraries
After the horrible murder of Lord Littleby, "Papa" Gauche deduces that the killer will board the Leviathan, a luxurious cruiser making its maiden voyage to India and he arranges passage. On board, he swiftly narrows the list of primary suspects to four. Each of them - a troubled baronet, an officer in the Imperial Japanese Army, the pregnant wife of a Swiss banker and a faded English spinster - is given alternate chapters in which to watch and describe the others, the scene is set for an exciting mystery which follows the style of Agatha Christie.

Return of the Dancing Master - Henning Mankell

ISBN: 0099455463
A retired policeman meets a grisly end in a remote district permeated by a network of evil. A dark, unpredictable and gutsy suspense from Scandinavia's best crime writer.
- Lewisham Libraries
Billed as the 'Nordic king of European thrillers', this well-established author introduces us to a new hero in a typically morbid story. Set in cold, dark, northern Sweden, the tale of conspiracy explores the neo-Nazi movement and draws the reader in to a world full of chaos and evil.
- Bromley Libraries
"Cold, wet, dismal Sweden...Sound dull? It's not! These are superb crime thrillers, simply the best around". This one doesn't feature the moody insomniac Kurt Wallander ....but try this one first and you'll be hooked - I guarantee it.

Seville communion - Arturo Perez-Reverte

ISBN: 0099453967
Engrossing from start to finish, I liked the way the rich, descriptive passages evoked the atmosphere of Seville. The intricate conspiracy is unravelled by Father Quart, who is a well-rounded and likeable character.
- Bromley Libraries
Noir type thriller set around attempts to demolish a Baroque church with very Spanish villains and anti-hero from the Vatican sent to investigate.

Shape of water - Andrea Camilleri

ISBN: 0330492861
Inspector Salvo Montalbano in top form taking on the Senori of La Cosa Nostra.
- Lewisham Libraries
This immensely enjoyable story introduces a charismatic detective who has very strong opinions and an ironic sense of humour. Although a witty novel in which the main protagonist is frequently indulging his passion for fine food, there is an inherent criticism of the perceived corruption found in the Sicilian police force.
- Bromley Libraries
Something very different, at times strangely funny, at others cruel and sad. Set in backwoods Sicily, Inspector Montalbano is an odd character to fathom out...cynical about most things other than food, he nonetheless gets the job done in his own unique way. Stick with it, and I'm sure you'll be hooked. (By the way, each book has a glossary of Italian terms & Sicilian history, which is very useful).

Very long engagement - Sebastien Japrisot
ISBN: 0099449293
A runaway bestseller in France and the winner of the 1991 Prix Interallie, this astonishing novel is many things at once: an absorbing mystery, a study of the different ways one story can be told, and a moving and incisive portrait of life in France during and after the First World War, plus a love story of transforming power and beauty. It has been compared to War and Peace by the Los Angeles Times. A great book, and one of those you wish would never end.
